About Asphalt Calculator

Calculating how much asphalt you need

Many road builders and homeowners seeking to create a nice driveway face the challenge of estimating the amount of Hotmix Asphalt (HMA, also known as bitumen, blacktop, or Tarmac) needed to cover a specific area. Our asphalt calculator (also known as tarmac calculator) is designed to help with these calculations, though the accuracy depends entirely on the measurements provided.

Important Note

The calculator uses a standard asphalt density of 145 lbs/ft³ (2322 kg/m³). Actual density may vary depending on the specific asphalt mixture used.

Calculation Process

  1. Calculate the volume of asphalt needed using geometric formulas and measurements (width, length, and depth)
  2. Use the standard density for asphalt (145 lb/ft³ or 2322 kg/m³)
  3. Multiply volume by density to determine weight

Measurement Units

Our calculator supports various units including inches, feet, yards, meters, and centimeters for your convenience.

Pro Tip

Consider ordering 5-6% more asphalt than calculated to account for measurement imprecisions and potential waste during application. For example, if you need 10 tons, order 10.5 or 11 tons to avoid additional transportation costs.

Irregular Shapes

For irregular areas, divide the space into regular sections and calculate each separately. Sum the results for total requirements. For complex scenarios requiring precise estimation, professional consultation is recommended.
